Can Produce Better Vision than
is Possible
with Glasses and Contacts
N. Dartmouth, MA, November 7, 2005 – Stephen
F. Sullivan, MD and Kenneth
R. Kenyon, MD of Eye Health Vision Centers in Dartmouth,
Fairhaven, Taunton, MA and Middletown, RI announced
today that they are offering the FDA approved CustomVue
individualized laser vision correction procedure, a
major breakthrough for the correction of nearsightedness
and astigmatism. The treatment signals a new era in
laser vision correction, and establishes a new standard
for the measurement and correction of the unique imperfections
in each individual’s vision. This precise level
of measurement and correction enables individuals to
potentially achieve better vision than with glasses
and contacts.
CustomVue™ can help
individuals to achieve their best possible vision, typically
20/20 or better. The procedure is driven by WaveScan® technology,
originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes
to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space.
VISX has adapted this technology for use in individualized
laser vision correction to treat the estimated 72 million
nearsighted and astigmatic individuals in the United States.
“Glasses and contacts are limited in their ability
to correct unique imperfections in each individual’s
vision,” said Dr. Ken Kenyon. “In fact thousands
of individuals have the same prescription. With WaveScan-driven
technology, we are able to carefully measure the unique
imperfections of each individual’s vision and develop
a treatment plan tailored just for that person’s eyes.”
A clinical study showed that 100 percent of participants
could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts one
year after the procedure. Seventy percent of these patients
had vision better than 20/20, without glasses or contacts.
Anyone over the age of 21 who wears glasses or contacts
for the correction of nearsightedness and/or astigmatism
may be a candidate for the procedure.
CustomVue™
sets a new standard in the laser vision correction industry. “I
am delighted that CustomVue is now available for our patients,”
noted Dr. Stephen Sullivan. “We were so pleased with
the outstanding results of the clinical study and are delighted
that we now have the ability to treat nearsighted and astigmatic
individuals using the most advanced technology available
from VISX, Incorporated,”
Dr. Kenyon added.
