Claudio A. Ferreira, M.D. graduated from
the Medical University of Vassouras in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He completed two
internships: his first in internal medicine
at Santa Casa Hospital in Brazil and his
second in general surgery at the M. L.
King/Charles Drew University Medical Center
in Los Angeles, California.
Subsequently, he performed his ophthalmology residency
at the King-Drew/UCLA program in Los Angeles. Dr Ferreira
completed two vitreoretinal fellowships: his first at the
University of Virginia and his second at the Vitreoretinal
Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dr. Ferreira is a vitreoretinal surgeon and specializes
in retina, vitreous and diabetic eye diseases. He participated
in the clinical trials of an earlier version of Lucentis
called Avastin while working as a Clinical Instructor of
Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia in 2004. Avastin,
which had been used previously by ophthalmologists on a
trial basis, was replaced by it’s “new and improved”
descendent, Lucentis in
June, 2006. Dr. Ferreira converted to Lucentis immediately
upon its FDA approval and was the first retinal surgeon
to offer Lucentis to the patients of Southeastern Massachusetts.
This treatment represents a significant advancement, as
improvement of vision in patients with wet macular degeneration
was almost unheard of prior to the discovery of Avastin
and Lucentis.
He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology,
California Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research
in Vision and Ophthalmology and the Brazilian society of
Ophthalmology.
He practices in our Dartmouth, Fall
River and Taunton offices.
