What to Expect During Your Surgery

The LASIK procedure is relatively fast and painless, and is normally completed within 30 to 40 minutes so you can begin to enjoy life’s pleasures without the hassle of glasses or contacts. The actual laser component of the procedure takes less than two minutes. The day of your LASIK procedure should not be stressful as the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis without the need for anything more than a topical anesthetic. As a result the patients experience immediate improved vision, sometimes drastically, so they no longer require glasses or contacts.

Post-operative Care

After surgery you should immediately be able to resume your normal work and leisure lifestyle. However, for your comfort and convenience we recommend that you have a friend or family member drive you home and that you spend the rest of the day relaxing. You will be given eye drops to make sure your eyes remain well hydrated after the surgery. Protective glasses may also be provided to wear while sleeping, for a limited amount of time, to ensure that you do not rub your eyes during sleep. You should immediately begin to see the difference LASIK makes.

Excimer Laser Technology

The VISX STAR platform's history of dependability and performance is well known in ophthalmology. The STAR S4 ™ IR from VISX has taken that reputation to an even higher level. This excimer laser system represents the most advanced laser technology platform available today. Integrating data collected by the WaveScan WaveFront System, the STAR S4™ IR utilizes these exclusive VISX technologies to deliver precision custom ablations:

  • Iris Registration (IR): The first FDA-approved, fully automated, non-contact method of alignment of the correct CustomVue treatment to the corneal site
  • Variable Spot Scanning (VSS): Variable beam sizes from as small as 0.65 mm up to 6.5 mm scanned over the treatment area, conserving tissue and optimizing treatment times
  • Variable Repetition Rate (VRR): VRR delivers treatment at varying repetition rates, optimizing treatment time
  • ActiveTrak 3-D Active Eye Tracking: Captures all 3 dimensions of intra-operative eye movements-no dilation required
  • ActiveTrak Automatic Centering: Locates, and then automatically sets the treatment center to the center of the pupil.

CustomVue™ Wavefront LASIK

The CustomVue™ LASIK process begins with a pre-operative consultation to inform you about the technology and the procedure. An evaluation follows to assess your overall eye health and to measure and create a detailed and unique WavePrint® map of your eyes. On the day of the procedure, your unique correction information is transferred directly from the WaveScan™ to the Visx STAR S4™ Laser where the LASIK procedure takes place.

CustomVue™ LASIK Clinical Study Results (VISX LASIK FDA STUDY)

VISX's FDA clinical study results were remarkable. Among other things:
1 year after the VISX CustomVue procedure

100% of the clinical study participants could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts
98% of the clinical study participants could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts
70% of the clinical study participants could see 20/16 or better without glasses or contacts

The Greater New Bedford Surgical and Laser Center

The Greater New Bedford Surgical and Laser Center was opened in 1986 with the express purpose of rendering high quality, state of the art eye surgery to patients of all ages, especially those with cataracts, glaucoma, or cornea disease. The Center is designed specifically with the needs of the patient in mind. The entire process from initial examination to final outcome is conducted in a pleasant comfortable environment.

After a patient decides to have surgery, he or she is assigned his or her own Surgical Counselor who is available to answer questions and provide assistance. These individuals are specially trained to assist the patient throughout the entire surgical experience, including follow up care for as long as necessary. Patients are encouraged to contact their counselor for any questions, no matter how simple or complex.
